Book, Blogging Notes

I've been swamped with last-week-on-the-job details, along with getting over the flu (first time in years without a flu vaccination, and wham) and writing my final column for the Mercury News (it appears on Sunday). In the past week there's been lots of great coverage of the blogging world, and some kind words for my work along the way. Among the noteworthy material:

  • My colleague (until tomorrow) Mike Bazeley discusses how blogs and other online forums have become a "global commons" in the wake of the tsunamis. See also this BBC story.
  • ABC News's World News Tonight understood the importance of bloggers, and called them "People of the Year" (Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing is featured).
  • Stuart Hughes, one of my heros in the blog world, posted some kind words about my book. Thanks, Stuart.
  • Jay Rosen has been penning a fascinating "top 10" list of journalism ideas emerging in 2004. My work figures in several, but I encourage you to just go to his invaluable PressThink blog and start reading.

Welcome to Dan's new blog! I know this will be a place I stop in a lot. Nearest parallel to it may be the Daily Peg . I will be very interested to see what you do with it. Thanks for the link, too. But why is HTML not allowed in comments?

Actually, I didn't know it wasn't allowed. I'm still exploring Typepad. Let me figure out what's what...

    Dan,

    All the best to you!

Going out on your own is very exciting!

But, why stay on the payroll for 2 days in the new year? Just to get a W-2 in 2006? [ironic grin]

Bob, I went off the payroll yesterday. The final column runs tomorrow.

I hope everyone got to see the actual television-aired version of the ABC News "People of the Year" segment on bloggers. It may have been one of the most non-dismissive mainstream segments on anything Internet related that I've seen in the past ten years.

Days or weeks ago I saw or overheard in a cable news here (half the world away) about a well-known journalist risking everything just to try out this "citizen journalism". This past several days its really quite hard to keep a smile but as I'm about to sleep I end up with this site and then I realized you're the person in the news...that put a smile to my face. Belated Happy New Year !!!!!

    Note:
Is Six Apart, Ltd. yours ? I'm wondering how come you didn't use your own domain name.

Congrats, Dan -- you are walking the walk, and you are an inspiration to a lot of folks.

I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I'm using Typepad for a blog for the time being. It was easy to set up, and I hope it'll be easy to maintain. I have no connection otherwise with Six Apart apart from knowing (and liking) the people involved with the company.

If Scoble has the faith in waiting for you, believe me, two things will happen:
    a) Lots of other people will wait ...
    b) Learn that you will get scobled often enough!

    how can bloggers reverse american
    "isolationism" ?
for exemple can you propagate the information about the amount of the US government aid to tsunami affected countries compared to the US Iraq war effort:
-how many budget days of the iraq war does it represent ?
